ReadList: The Sherlockian

Dear Friends and Readers,

I have always been a bookworm in my way. I just love books and reading as the ultimate distraction. There is a very specific genre I like but I am usually open to suggestions.  With the summer almost here I though about what books I would bring with me if I went on vacation (noticed that I said IF not when). Remember when in the 80s we would make a mixed tape for the friend we had a crush on? Today with the internet it’s all about playlists and wishlists and such & such lists, and I tought about creating a ReadList about books that I read and liked. So I have enlisted a couple of friends with great taste in books that will be contributing to this portion of the lifestyle section but I figured I would start myself.

I just finished a book I really enjoyed: “The Sherlockian” by Graham Moore.  This is a very refreshing debut of a young author and I think it is indicative of a new class of mistery/thriller authors who were probably brought up with the same books I read growing up.  I have always been a fan of Sherlock Holmes, the mannerism, the quirks, “the romance of a rational world” in a foggy London still light by gaslights. Graham Moore gives the classic a new, unexpected, enjoyeble spin. There is a writer with murder on his mind, twin misteries, feisty old ladies in mourning ready to beat down the culprit, a young nerd pursuing a dark secret, several murders, a femme fatale, two drag queens and some dynamite.

I won’t spoil the story because it is so thouroughly enjoyable that you deserve to read it yourself. I will just tell you that I could not put this book down at the end of my daily subway commute…. oh and when you see who is the real life Dr. Watson!!!

Even if you are not a fan of Sherlock Holmes you are going to love this book – read it first and thank me later!
